The LG QNED91 is here, and it's a watershed moment in which this new breed of OLED TVs might give LG's greatest OLED TVs a fight for their money at the top of the heap. LG's OLED TVs, with their great pixel responsiveness, amazing image clarity, and game bar, are unquestionably among the best gaming TVs money can buy. However, LG OLED's reign as king of the hill is coming to an end because to its new QNED panels.

LG QNED91 – 4K MiniLED TV

The new LG QNED91 4K TV is, for all intents and purposes, as excellent as the famed LG OLED C1. It uses a proprietary combination of Quantum Dot and Nanocell technology with a Mini-LED backlighting system. There's absolutely nothing to criticise about this TV when it comes to LG's 7th Gen Alpha chipset, AI smarts, and great gaming capabilities.

Design & Features

The LG QNED91 4K Mini-LED is available in three sizes: 86, 75, and 65 inches, with the latter being our evaluation item. The TV is a touch thicker and heavier than its OLED counterparts, weighing in at 28kg, but the broad, curved stand does an excellent job of holding it upright. It does require a rather deep cabinet to sit on, so keep that in mind.

Similarly, the TV isn't going to win any beauty contests, but it's elegant enough in its simplicity, with a grey metal finish and thin bezels all around that allow the screen shine. A vast port selection can be found around the rear, including two HDMI 2.1 connectors, Ethernet, Optical, and USB interfaces. The TV has WiFi 6 and Bluetooth for extra connection.

Behind the scenes, the Alpha 7 Gen 4 AI processor performs well in controlling the Mini-LEDs to great effect. The clever 4K upscaling and real-time image processing ensure a breathtaking image at all times, and all major HDR formats, including HDR10, HLG, HGiG, and Dolby Vision IQ, are supported. The QNED91, like its OLED brothers, operates on Web OS 6, which is straightforward and simple to use, with a focus on getting you into content quickly.

The Game Optimiser is also included, and with ALLM, VRR, AMD FreeSync, and Nvidia G-Sync compatibility, this TV could easily top our best TV for PS5 and Xbox Series X and best 120Hz 4K TV lists based only on specs and feature sets. The panel is, of course, the show's star. It contains more than 900 Mini-LED zones, which is greater than the Samsung QN95A, which we really liked. In both SDR and HDR modes, this allows the QNED to achieve exceptional clarity, contrast, and brightness.

Performance

The LG QNED91 performs admirably, which is predictable. The new Mini-LED backlighting is both bright and contrasty, with considerably deeper blacks than any other LCD television I've seen. There is still some blooming around bright white objects or writing, but not enough to detract from the viewing experience.

The TV's AI capabilities excel in 4K upscaling and colour management, resulting in a stunning, true-to-life image in movies and streaming. When watching material, I didn't notice the soap opera effect as much as I did with the C1 OLED. HDR performance is excellent, due to the Mini-LEDs' enhanced contrast and stronger highlights, which result in a peak brightness of 1000 nits and a 6000:1 contrast ratio.

Gaming on the QNED91 is, unsurprisingly, fantastic. Colors were vivid and clear, easily matching the top QLED TVs, and details were razor-sharp, with adaptive sync making fast-paced movement buttery smooth. The HDR brilliantly rendered the snowy peaks that contrasted with Aloy's bright armour and the chaotic explosions during combat, making Horizon Zero Dawn Frozen Wilds appear absolutely stunning. Halo Infinite responds to my inputs quickly and smoothly, with no perceptible latency.

The Game Optimiser makes it simple to monitor and modify performance, and the universal remote capability lets you operate your consoles from the TV's remote. The QNED91's outstanding audio performance completes the experience. The 40W 2.2 speaker system creates a rich and complete experience with remarkable clarity and powerful bass. It amazed me with how realistically it showed gunshot casings falling to the ground in the Matrix movie when Neo rescued Morpheus. It's a crazy scenario, to be sure, with a lot of gunfire, explosions, and a catchy music. Regardless of the material, LG's AI Sound Pro system performs admirably.

Should you buy it in the end?

Mini-LED, as my colleague Steve put it, is a transformational technology, and the LG QNED91 is living proof of that. In many aspects, LG's LCD TV is on par with its OLED counterparts, if not slightly better. You no longer have to be concerned about OLED burn-in. The QNED91 shines whether you're viewing Dolby Vision movies on Disney+ or playing Halo Infinite at 120 frames per second.

It's a shame, therefore, that the QNED91 is now significantly more costly than the C1 OLED with the same panel size. To be fair, it's a wonderful TV, but is it really worth so much more than an OLED? No, most likely not. But that doesn't change the fact that the LG QNED91 is now one of the greatest TVs available.
